Winchester -- December 28, 2005 --
Announcement re New Trails on Tennessee Side of Walls of Jericho

For Tennessee Trails Association Members and All Hikers!

December 28, 2005

This is to inform you that the Tennessee Wildlife Jericho hiking trails are not open for public use. The trail heads are so posted and yet we have people who are attempting to hike this closed area. Continued disregard of this mandate could not only result in possible prosecution for trespassing, but can potentially jeopardize the continued development of hiking trails in this scenic area. Therefore I ask your cooperation in not endeavoring to hike in this area until the trails are officially opened some time in the spring.

Sincerely, Jim Schroeder
TTA/TWRA Jericho Trail Development Coordinator

NOTE: THE TRAILS ON THE ALABAMA SIDE ARE OPEN AS USUAL AND ARE NOT AFFECTED BY THIS ANNOUNCEMENT!

Oak Ridge, TN -- April 12, 2003 -- The Third Annual Cumberland Trail Auction.

A happy crowd will gather on the evening of Saturday, April 12, from 5:30 to 10:00 pm, at the Garden Plaza Hotel in Oak Ridge for some spirited bidding as the Cumberland Trail Conference holds its third annual auction to help fund the creation of the Cumberland Trail. Proceeds from this year's event will be used for the expenses of The Big Dig - 2003. Tickets are $25.00 and include a buffet dinner and live entertainment. Call 931-456-6259, or send an email.

The live auction will be conducted by Bear Stephenson of Stephenson Auction & Realty, Clinton.

Scheduled for May 18-June 28, 2003, The Big Dig is CTC's most ambitious trail building program ever. It will place 100 volunteers on the trail every day for a six-week period, with the goal of completing a 30-mile section of trail through the Rock, Possum, and Soddy gorges of Hamilton County, just north of Chattanooga. Headquartered at the Dogwood Camp, just outside Soddy Daisy, TN, the program will involve local volunteers as well as those who come from afar. Out-of-towners will be provided a place to stay, as well as food, making it as convenient as possible for them to work as many days as they wish.

A fun way for your organization to participate is to be a table sponsor by agreeing to sell 8 tickets to fill a table with your members and friends. Table sponsors will be acknowledged in the program.

For a sneak preview of auction items, check the CTC website over the next few weeks.

National Trails Day - June 1, 2002.

Walking is good for you! Walking in the woods is even better! The theme for the American Hiking Society's National Trails Day 2002 is "Hike for Health." The Cumberland Trail Conference, an Associate Organization within TTA, is offering hikes on various segments of the Cumberland Trail State Park with something for everyone, ranging from easy to moderately difficult. Volunteers from TTA chapters will serve as leaders for these hikes. The event will be held rain or shine.

The Cumberland Trail State Park is Tennessee's first linear state park, and runs from Chattanooga to Cumberland Gap. This unique "trail" state park is being built by volunteers under the oversight of the non-profit Cumberland Trail Conference. Over 53,000 volunteer hours have been donated in the past five years to build 114 miles of the Cumberland Trail. The remaining 169 miles of the park system lie on private lands that must be purchased in order to complete the vision of a long-distance trail across Tennessee. CTC is raising $3 million in private funds in order to qualify for $13.9 million in public funding secured for the CTSP.

Your participation in the Hike for Health will help us reach our goal. Your donation is tax-deductible.

Tullahoma, TN -- February 11, 2002:

Breaking News! Approximately fifty people from Tullahoma and surrounding communities met Monday night, Feb. 11, to discuss the possibility of a new TTA chapter to serve this area of the state. Brent Morris, TTA's Middle Tennessee at-large representative, organized the meeting. Fount Bertram, TTA vice president, presented a slide show covering TTA activities. Anne Wesley, TTA membership director, explained the benefits and responsibilities of affiliating with TTA. Based on the enthusiastic response by the participants, it is expected that representatives of the group will petition the TTA Board for a charter as TTA's twelfth chapter at the board's Feb 16 meeting. More information in next month's newsletter.

Oneida, TN -- December 1, 2001:
The National Park Service has deferred its decision on the Mount Helen Prototype Trail project. The project had originally called for the development of a prototype trail in Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area that would allow the park to evaluate trail construction and maintenance techniques. The development of the trail, access road, and trailhead would also have fulfilled a long-standing need for improved recreational opportunities in the southern portion of the park in Fentress County, TN. The decision will be revisited in the park's General Management Plan, which is combined with a comprehensive environmental impact statement that analyzes alternatives for future management of Big South Fork NRRA.

Nashville, TN. -- November 27, 2001:
The TTA Nashville Chapter will be hosting the 2002 Annual Membership Meeting. The chapter voted tonight to hold the meeting at Fall Creek Falls State Park during the weekend of November 8-10, 2002. Watch the Tennessee Trails newsletter for additional details.

Newport, TN. -- November 10, 2001:
At their annual meeting here, the TTA membership elected the following officers for the year 2002:

President Leigh Jones Plateau
Vice President Fount Bertram Murfreesboro
Treasurer Carol Haley Memphis
Secretary Anna Clark Northwest
Membership Director Anne Wesley Nashville

All officers are elected for one year terms. In addition, Mark Stanfill from Murfreesboro was elected as the Middle Tennessee at-large Director for a three year term.
